NOTIFICATION No. 50(RE-2000) 1997-2002 Dated 13th February, 2001

Implementation of Bar-Code Postponed indefinitely

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1922 (No. 22 of 1992) read with paragraph 1.3 of the Export and Import Policy, 1997-2002 (incorporating amendments made upto 31.3.2000), the Central Government hereby makes the following amendments in the Export and Import Policy, 1997-2002: (incorporating amendment made upto 31.3.2000).

Attention is invited to notification No.32(RE-2000) / 1997-2000 dated. 1st September, 2000 and notification No. 43 (RE-2000)/1997-2000 dated 22nd November, 2000: the former making it mandatory for all exports to implement bar coding using international symbologies/international numbering standard w.e.f. 1st December, 2000 and the latter extending this date to 1st April, 2001.

In view of various representations received citing the problems in implementation of bar-coding, the issue has been re-examined. Keeping in perspective the various difficulties faced by trade and industry to adopt bar coding from 1st April, 2001, it has been decided to further postpone the date of implementation until further orders in this regard.

This issues in public interest.
